Empire City unveils 50$ million renovation

“I think I paid for this place,” said Melvin, surveying the space around him.

There was a touch of pride, and perhaps disbelief, in his voice.

Bronx resident Melvin, a regular at Empire City Casino in nearby Yonkers, heads there on all his days off.

A $50 million dollar renovation at the Casino, begun in July 2011, is nearly completed.
And Melvin is convinced he’s paid no small part in the expansion and redesign.

While he notes that his “contribution” over the course of the past few years has been made in the form of his losses, Melvin has also had some big wins during his visits.

Still, though he’s something of a high roller, Melvin does his gambling on the down low.

“I’m not even supposed to be here,” he said wryly. “My wife would kill me.”

So why tempt fate?

“The lure of the win,” he said. “The chance.”

On Thurs., Jan. 31st was the first day the new extension was opened to the public, and those in attendance included local elected officials such as State Senators Jeff Klein; Gustavo Rivera; and Ruth Hassell-Thompson.

Designed by STUDIO V of New York City, the 66,000 square-foot expansion includes a new casino entrance with a 30,000 square-foot modern gaming floor crowned by a contemporary art piece featuring the New York City skyline.

The 28-foot tall striking recreation of the skyline is made entirely of nails driven though the wall.

There is also what Tim Rooney Jr., the General Counsel of Empire City Casino, calls the “square wall,” which features countless polycarbonate panels that create an abstract representation of New York City.

Moreover, customers who use valet parking will be treated to a grand entrance under a new sculptural, high-tech porte-cochère and make their way through a curved façade of frameless glass that is over 45 feet high.

“This was done in an effort to create a great sense of arrival,” said Rooney Jr.

No detail was spared in the interior design, and even the carpet features a colorful representation of the city as well.

“We wanted this facility to be all about the city,” said Rooney Jr. of the redesign theme.

“At Empire City Casino, we set out to re-invent the modern casino,” added Jay Valgora, the principal and founder of STUDIO V Architecture. “Our design features a four-story high arc of frameless glass to project the energy of the casino onto the building exterior, while bringing the drama of the landscape and architecture into the gaming hall. The façade forms a backdrop, utilizing exotic structural systems and innovative materials.”

The expansion will allow Empire City to reconfigure its present gaming layout with the relocation of nearly 700 of its existing 5,380 slot machines.

Mary Guzmán of the Bronx played her favorite coin machine games just below the nail skyline.

“It’s nice,” she said.

But even more enticing was the glow of rows and rows of new games—all waiting to be played.

She explained that she spends on average $200 each time she visits the casino.

These days, she says, she only comes once a week, but before, she came at least twice a week.

“I come here to get out of the house. It helps let go of my fears. I feel carefree here,” said Guzman, who is retired and had a tumor removed from her throat a year ago.

And as the renovation nears completion, Guzmán will have more reasons to come to Empire Casino.

A bowling alley, along with the two restaurants, are opening up as well.

The restaurants will feature 100 types of beer brewed in New York State—including beer from the Bronx Brewery, as well as whiskey from the Tirado Distillery, which is based in the South Bronx.

They are currently getting their produce and meats from Hunts Point Terminal Market.

Pinch will be a premium casual American grill and Dan Rooney’s Café & Bar will serve as a new rendition of the classic Irish pub.

Both restaurants will offer a casual dining experience with premium food.

Brian Ingram, general manager of the restaurants, says that of the 1,200 current employees, half are from the Bronx or Northern Manhattan, with the majority hailing from the Bronx.

And with the expansion, management is looking for 100 more employees for front of house and back of house staff.

“We’re looking for experienced candidates for all front and back of house positions, from managers, bartenders and servers, to cooks, dishwashers and more,” he explained.

Michael Palmieri, the Director of Video Games Operations estimates that Bronx patrons, who constitute approximately a third of the visitors to the casino, wager on average between $75 and $100 per visit.

The casino also puts money into the pockets of local residents.

The expansion has created more than 100 construction jobs, and ultimately 200 permanent jobs when complete.

Moreover, representatives of Empire City Casino noted that its partnership with New York State has helped to generate $1.6 billion in revenues for state education through the Division of Lottery, and another $500 million for local and state governments and the racing industry, signifying more than $2 billion dollars of revenue that they argue reduced property taxes for state residents.

Rooney Jr. pointed out that Empire Casino also has a solution to people with gambling issues.

“There’s a valid concern for people who have issues with gambling,” he said.

The patrons can adjust their games, and when they recognize they have a problem, can sign a self-exclusion form that bars them from entering the casino.

Guzmán plans to continue wagering $200 weekly at Empire City Casino.

And although she was on the end of a losing bet as she spoke, she was happy.

“It’s people who play what they don’t have who you have to worry about.”

Melvin, station at this favorite game, Land of the Free, agreed.

“$500 is my limit today,” he said.

“I’m not suffering,” he smiled. “I have a car, I’m about to go buy another car.”

Un boliche, junto con dos restaurantes, se están abriendo también.

Los restaurantes contarán con 100 tipos de cerveza elaboradas en el Estado de Nueva York, incluyendo cerveza de the Bronx Brewery, así como de la destilería de whisky Tirado, que tiene su sede en el Sur del Bronx.

Actualmente están recibiendo sus productos y carnes del Mercado Hunts Point Terminal.

Pinch será una parrilla premium americana informal y Dan Rooney’s Café & Bar servirá como una nueva versión del clásico pub irlandés.

Ambos restaurantes ofrecen una experiencia gastronómica informal con comida de alta calidad.

Brian Ingram, Gerente General de los restaurantes, dice que de los 1,200 empleados actuales, la mitad son del Bronx o del norte de Manhattan, la mayoría provenientes del Bronx.

La expansión ha creado más de 100 empleos en la construcción, y en última instancia, 200 empleos permanentes cuando haya terminado.

Por otra parte, los representantes del Casino Empire City señalaron que su asociación con el estado de Nueva York ha ayudado a generar $1.6 mil millones en ingresos para la educación pública a través de la División de Loterías, y otros $500 millones para los gobiernos locales y estatales y la industria de las carreras, lo que significa más de $2 mil millones en ingresos que, argumentan, reducen los impuestos a la propiedad para los residentes del estado.

Rooney Jr. señaló que el Casino Empire también tiene una solución para las personas con problemas de juego.

Guzmán planea continuar apostando $200 dólares por semana en el Casino Empire City.

Y a pesar de que estaba en el extremo de perder una apuesta mientras hablaba, ella estaba feliz.

“Es de la gente que juega lo que no tiene de quienes hay que preocuparse.”

Melvin, ubicado en su juego favorito, Land of the Free, estuvo de acuerdo.

“$500 dólares es mi límite hoy”, dijo.

“No estoy sufriendo”, sonrió. “Tengo un coche, y estoy a punto de ir a comprar otro”.
