“Building the American Dream, One Student at a Time” is the theme of this year’s dinner, which will be held at the Tribeca Rooftop. The former newspaper columnist and host of NY1’s Inside City Hall Errol Louis will be the special guest emcee for the evening. BCC offers more than 30 academic programs that serve to prepare students for careers and to continue their education at four-year colleges. It provides approximately 11,500 students with quality academic programs, outstanding faculty, and flexible class schedules. BCC is a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI), with students representing approximately 100 countries. The Foundation will celebrate the inaugural year of the College’s sixth President, Dr. Thomas A. Isekenegbe. In addition, three BCC benefactors will be honored: Harriet and George Blank, whose efforts led to the establishment of the Pershing Rifles Company E-8/Bob Fernández Scholarship; and William T. Schwendler, formerly of Northrop Grumman, who has been a scholarship supporter and instrumental in introducing BCC automotive technology students to careers in aeronautics. The Gala will highlight the Kalief Browder Memorial Scholarship fund, named in honor of the late BCC student and subject of the harrowing New Yorker magazine account of his incarceration and solitary confinement on Rikers Island as a teenager. While the charge was ultimately dropped, Browder’s story has galvanized calls for criminal justice reforms. In his memory, the first recipient of the $5,000 scholarship — an accomplished BCC student who overcame the hardships of incarceration — will be introduced at the Gala. A portion of the event’s proceeds will be designated to permanently endow the scholarship, ensuring that resources remain in place to support students for years to come.
