Fiesta marks four decades of service by Urban Health Plan

Era hora de ¡Fiesta!
Westchester Avenue was alive with the sound of music as Urban Health Plan (UHP) kicked off its Annual Fiesta de San Juan with a groovy day-long party that transported the South Bronx back to the heady era of disco.
Hundreds of attendees of all ages enjoyed a day of live music, great 70’s costumes and a wide range of activities for all the family. Beyond the entertainment, the fair on Sat., Jun. 21st also served to highlight the health issues afflicting the community, and how UHP continues to offer critical services and programs that serve the well-being of all. Attendees received free health screenings, and were able to receive information firsthand about topics such as mental health, domestic violence, bulling, diabetes, sexual education and asthma.
The fair included face painting, raffles and arts and crafts, and many of the kiosks were outfitted with old LP records and disco balls.
Urban Health Plan is a network of federally qualified community health centers based in the South Bronx and Queens, with a dedicated mission to improve the health status of underserved communities. It has served the Hunts Point, Mott Haven, Morrisania and other surrounding communities since 1974.
On Saturday, the Fiesta began with a morning parade at Westchester Avenue and Simpson Street, complete with a performance from the Golden Knights Marching Band.
It led to West Farm Road, between Westchester and Hoe Avenues, and dozens joined in along the way.
UHP President and CEO Paloma Hernández explained that there was ample reason to celebrate.
“Today, we’re not only celebrating the 19th anniversary of this Fiesta de San Juan, we’re also commemorating the 40th anniversary of Urban Health Plan,” she said. “This celebration is a way to give back to the community. We started offering services to the community during the decade of the 70’s. It is why we decided to choose the 70’s as our theme, in memory of when we started. We’re back to our roots today.”
Hernandez noted that the organization is growing year after year.
“We are serving sixty thousand people, and we’re excited to see how the numbers keep rising. Today, we’re celebrating and we hope everybody is enjoying this moment,” she said. “This is [also] essentially a day for education. We want to raise alerts about different issues affecting the neighborhood, but also let people know how we can help.”
Sonia Benítez, a mother of three who lives in the area, said she was thrilled to have participated. She said she had come to entertain her children, and had come away with much more.
“I’m glad I came because the kids are having fun,” she said. “And I have learned about subjects like nutrition. It’s been a fun day.”

La avenida Westchester vivió con el sonido de la música mientras Urban Health Plan (UHP) inauguró su Fiesta Anual de San Juan, un evento maravilloso de un día que transportó al sur del Bronx a la embriagadora época de la música disco.
Cientos de asistentes de todas las edades disfrutaron de una jornada de música en vivo, con grandes trajes de los años 70 y una amplia gama de actividades para toda la familia. Más allá del entretenimiento, la feria del sábado 21 de junio también sirvió para destacar los problemas de salud que afectan a la comunidad, y cómo UHP continúa ofreciendo servicios y programas críticos que sirven al bienestar de todos. Los asistentes recibieron exámenes gratuitos de salud y pudieron obtener información de primera mano sobre temas como: salud mental, violencia doméstica, acoso, intimidación, diabetes, educación sexual y asma.
La feria incluyó pintura de caras, rifas y artes y oficios, y muchos de los quioscos estuvieron equipados con viejos discos LP y bolas de discoteca.
Urban Health Plan es una red de centros comunitarios de salud, calificados a nivel federal, con sede en el sur del Bronx y Queens, con la misión específica de mejorar el estado de salud de las comunidades. Ha servido a Hunts Point, Mott Haven, Morrisania y otras comunidades circundantes desde 1974.
El sábado, la fiesta comenzó con un desfile matutino en la avenida Westchester y la calle Simpson, y fue completada con la actuación de la Golden Knights Marching Band.
Avanzaron hacia West Farm Road, entre las avenidas Westchester y Hoe, y decenas se unieron en el camino.
La presidenta y directora general de UHP, Paloma Hernández, explicó que había muchas razones para celebrar.
“Hoy estamos no sólo celebrando el 19° aniversario de esta fiesta de San Juan, también estamos conmemorando el 40° aniversario de Urban Health Plan”, dijo. “Esta celebración es una manera de retribuir a la comunidad. Empezamos a ofrecer servicios durante la década de los años 70, es por eso que decidimos elegir los años 70 como nuestro tema, recordando cuando empezamos. Hoy regresamos a nuestras raíces”.
Hernández señaló que la organización crece año tras año.
“Estamos al servicio de sesenta mil personas, y muy contentos de ver cómo los números siguen aumentando. Hoy estamos celebrando y esperamos que todo el mundo esté disfrutando de este momento”, dijo. “Este es [también] esencialmente un día para la educación. Queremos crear alertas sobre diferentes temas que afectan al barrio y también que la gente sepa cómo le podemos ayudar”.
Sonia Benítez, madre de tres hijos que vive en la zona, dijo que estaba encantada de haber participado. Dijo haber asistido para que sus hijos se entretuvieran, y salió con mucho más.
“Me alegro de haber venido, porque los niños se divirtieron”, dijo. “Y he aprendido acerca de temas como la nutrición. Ha sido un día muy divertido”.
