A night manager at a McDonald’s in the Kingsbridge section of the Bronx was stabbed to death outside the restaurant in the early morning hours on Mon., Jan. 4th.
Police said that 28-year-old Adam García was attacked around 4:30 a.m. as he finished up his shift at the restaurant, located at 5765 Broadway near West 236th Street.
Authorities are still searching for the assailant, who fled the scene.
Witnesses told police that García and the assailant went outside together and got into a heated exchange in the parking lot just before the stabbing.
According to police, García had asked the man to leave the McDonald’s after he had spent about eight hours at the restaurant. The man left, but came back with a weapon that he used to stab García multiple times in the chest.
A McDonald’s customer ran to the NYPD’s 50th Precinct headquarters, located near the restaurant, to summon help.
Though bleeding heavily, García was able to return to the restaurant but was later pronounced dead at New York-Presbyterian’s Allen Hospital.
The suspect, who is believed to be homeless, was wearing blue jeans and a burgundy hooded sweatshirt under a brown jacket, and was last seen running south along Broadway, said police.
Later on Monday, the NYPD released surveillance images of the man believed to be the suspect in the killing.
On Tuesday, local residents and business owners expressed shock.
Riverdale Diner owner Jolt Keapellyas has lived in and worked in the area for over 50 years, and said that the proximity of the local precinct heightens the sense of safety.
He said he could not recall a similar incident in the neighborhood, and noted that the diner also keeps late hours and often serves homeless patrons.
“I’ve never heard of that kind of problem before,” he said. “It doesn’t happen.”
But Sueheidi Richez, who works at a nearby Burger King, said she was less surprised. She does not always feel safe while working, and said police officers often seemed scarce.
“Now when something happens, [that’s when] you see cops around,” said Richez.
Andrew Melo worked as a manager at the same McDonald’s restaurant for nearly a decade, and said that during his tenure all he’d encountered were petty arguments.
“The most you’d see was people [just] fighting outside, nothing crazy,” he said.
Melo said he’d worked alongside Garcia for four years and described the father of a young son as hard-working and having a happy-go-lucky disposition.
García’s death was the precinct’s first recorded homicide of the year.
His former co-worker said he was still in disbelief.
“I never thought something like this would happen to him.”

El sospechoso, que se cree que es una persona sin hogar, vestía pantalones vaqueros y una sudadera con capucha color borgoña debajo de una chaqueta marrón, y fue visto por última vez corriendo hacia el sur a lo largo de Broadway, dijo la policía.
Más tarde el lunes, el NYPD liberó imágenes de vigilancia del hombre que se cree es el sospechoso del asesinato.
El martes, los residentes locales y los dueños de negocios expresaron su conmoción.
Jolt Keapellyas, propietario del restaurante Riverdale Diner, ha vivido y trabajado en la zona durante más de 50 años, y dijo que la proximidad de la comisaría local aumenta la sensación de seguridad.
Dijo que no podía recordar un incidente similar en el barrio y señaló que el restaurante también se mantiene abierto a altas horas de la noche y a menudo sirve a clientes sin hogar.
“Nunca había escuchado de ese tipo de problema antes”, dijo. “Esto no sucede”.
Pero Sueheidi Richez, quien trabaja en un Burger King cercano, dijo estar menos sorprendida. Ella no siempre se siente segura durante el trabajo y dijo que los oficiales de policía a menudo parecen escasos.

La muerte de García fue el primer homicidio registrado de la comisaría del año.
Su ex compañero de trabajo dijo todavía estar incrédulo.
