The Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute (CCCADI) is looking for artists to submit work to be considered for an upcoming exhibition, titled “After Afropolitan.”
Open to artists of all mediums, the exhibit is designed to deconstruct and expand the conversation around the term “Afropolitan.”
“We’re looking for artists to give their own interpretation of the term, or own celebration of the term,” explained Desiree Gordon, CCCADI’s Director of Programs.
The “Afropolitan” moniker first gained popularity after a 2005 magazine article by writer Taiye Selasi, who wrote about multilingual Africans with a global outlook, calling them “not citizens but Africans of the world.”
Since then, the term has grown to describe other qualities, like Africans who are politically savvy or possess a certain hipness or style.
“It’s typically used to describe a modern, multilingual, highly accomplished person of African descent, who thinks internationally,” said Gordon. “But it can mean different things to different people.”
Presented in conjunction with the Weeksville Heritage Center and AfriPOP!, the After Afropolitan exhibit gives artists the opportunity to express their personal vision and imagination related to their own experiences in the African Diaspora, said Gordon.
“We’re not vested in presenting one particular opinion or outcome, we’re really looking to start a conversation,” she commented.
“And we’re also looking at where we go from here — what comes next after the term ‘Afropolitan.'”
Artists can offer film, painting, sculpture, photography, or any type of mixed media to CCCADI for consideration in the exhibit.
The deadline for submissions is November 21.
Submitted works will be reviewed by a team of artists and curators from both the United States and Africa.
The final selections will be included in the After Afropolitan exhibition, to be held at the Weeksville Heritage Center in Brooklyn from February 1 until March 6.
“We’re really looking to get people talking when they look around the hall at what the artists have come up with,” said Gordon.
Founded in 1976, CCCADI’s mission has been to combine arts and advocacy to document African traditions that have been uprooted to the Caribbean and the Americas.
In 2015, the institute will move into a new headquarters — a former firehouse on 125th Street in Harlem.
All applications must be received by Friday, November 21.

El Instituto del Centro Cultural Caribeño de la Diáspora Africana (CCCADI por sus siglas en inglés) está buscando artistas que presenten su obra para ser considerada para una próxima exposición titulada “After Afropolitan”.
Abierto a artistas de todos los medios, la exposición está diseñada para deconstruir y ampliar la conversación en torno al término “Afropolitan”.
“Estamos buscando artistas que brinden su propia interpretación del término o celebración propia de la palabra”, explicó Desiree Gordon, directora de programas de CCCADI.
El nombre “Afropolitan” se volvió popular por un artículo publicado en una revista en 2005, en el que Taiye Selasi escribió acerca de los africanos multilingües con una perspectiva global, que los califica como “no ciudadanos, sino africanos del mundo”.
Desde entonces, el término ha llegado a describir otras cualidades, como los africanos que son políticamente astutos o poseen cierta onda o estilo.
“Se utiliza normalmente para describir a una persona moderna, multilingüe, altamente realizada, de ascendencia africana y que piensa a nivel internacional”, dijo Gordon. “Pero puede significar diferentes cosas para diferentes personas”.
Presentada en conjunto con el centro Weeksville Heritage y AfriPOP!, la exposición After Afropolitan ofrece a los artistas la oportunidad de expresar su visión personal e imaginación en relación con sus propias experiencias de la diáspora africana, dijo Gordon.
“No tenemos interés en presentar una opinión o resultado en particular, realmente estamos buscando iniciar una conversación”, comentó.
“Y también queremos ver hacia dónde vamos desde aquí, lo que viene después del término Afropolitan”.
Los artistas pueden enviar obras de cine, pintura, escultura, fotografía o de cualquier tipo de técnica mixta a CCCADI para su consideración en la exposición.
La fecha límite de presentación es el 21 de noviembre.
Las obras serán revisadas por un equipo de artistas y curadores tanto de Estados Unidos como de África.
Las selecciones finales se incluirán en la exposición After Afropolitan, que se celebrará en el centro Weeksville Heritage, en Brooklyn, desde el 1 de febrero hasta el 6 de marzo.
“Realmente estamos buscando que la gente hable cuando vean en la sala lo que los artistas crearon”, dijo Gordon.
Fundada en 1976, la misión de CCCADI ha sido combinar las artes y la defensa para documentar las tradiciones africanas que han sido arrancadas del Caribe y las Américas.
En 2015, el instituto se trasladará a una nueva sede, una antigua estación de bomberos en la calle 125, en Harlem.
Todas las solicitudes deben ser recibidas antes del viernes 21 de noviembre.
