An Open Eco-House
Community Environmental Center (CEC), a Queens-based not-for-profit that brings energy efficiency to New York’s residential buildings, has brought its EcoHouse – a free, traveling, environmental education center – to the Bronx, where it will remain through May 24.
Partnering with Sustainable South Bronx and the Bronx Overall Economic Development Corporation (BOEDC), CEC has situated the EcoHouse at 620 Thieriot Avenue, the Holy Cross School.
The EcoHouse will be open to school groups Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and to the general public Monday through Friday, 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.
The EcoHouse is free and wheelchair-accessible. It will be closed on weekends.
“We are delighted to work with these Bronx organizations to bring the EcoHouse to the Soundview neighborhood,” said Richard Cherry, CEC’s President. “Sustainable South Bronx has worked hard to make this urban community a green, sustainable place to live, and the BOEDC has strengthened the borough greatly. The EcoHouse, with its hands-on displays, is a great way for young people and their families to learn about saving energy and protecting the environment. It builds on the terrific work that these organizations have already accomplished in the Bronx.”
CEC designed and built the EcoHouse in 2012 and has taken it to parks, schools and other sites throughout the city. Resembling a red-brick house on the outside, on the inside the 46-foot-long EcoHouse offers interactive exhibits about conserving electricity and water, and energy-efficient insulation. Displays about energy-saving boilers, windows and appliances add to the educational impact.
“Energy efficiency really depends on people,” says CEC’s Cherry. “We can insulate buildings, but unless the people who live in them understand why it’s vital to use energy-efficient light bulbs or conserve water – then we haven’t really done our job. That’s the mission of the EcoHouse.”
Intended to be fun as well as educational, the EcoHouse is a unique experience for both youngsters and their parents.
“Wall signs explain all the displays,” says Katherine Gloede, the EcoHouse Project Manager, “but to really get the full EcoHouse effect, come and listen to CEC’s expert guides, or bring your cell or smart phone and listen to the audio guide.”

The Community Environmental Center (CEC) recently received the EPA’s prestigious 2013 Environmental Quality Award. El centro ambiental comunitario (CEC por sus siglas en inglés), una organización sin fines de lucro con sede en Queens, que lleva eficiencia energética a los edificios residenciales de Nueva York, ha traído su EcoHouse – un centro de educación ambiental ambulante y gratuito – al Bronx, donde permanecerá hasta el 24 de mayo.
En asociación con Sustainable South Bronx y Bronx Overall Economic Development Corporation (BOEDC), el CEC ha situado la EcoHouse en el 620 de la avenida Thieriot, la escuela Holy Cross. La EcoHouse estará abierta a grupos escolares de lunes a viernes de 9 a.m. a 3 p.m. y para el público en general de lunes a viernes de 3 p.m. a 5 p.m. La EcoHouse es gratuita y tiene acceso para sillas de rueda. Permanecerá cerrada los fines de semana.

CEC diseñó y construyó la EcoHouse en 2012 y la ha llevado a parques, escuelas y otros sitios por toda la ciudad. Parecida a una casa de ladrillo rojo en el exterior, en el interior de 46 metros de largo EcoHouse ofrece exhibiciones interactivas sobre la conservación de la electricidad y el agua, y el aislamiento de energía.
Muestras de calderas de bajo consumo, ventanas y aparatos se suman al impacto educativo.
“La eficiencia energética depende realmente de la gente”, dice Cherry del CEC.
“Podemos aislar edificios, pero si las personas que viven en ellos no entienden por qué es imprescindible la utilización de focos de bajo consumo o conservar el agua, entonces no hemos hecho realmente nuestro trabajo. Esa es la misión de la EcoHouse”.
Tanto divertida como educativa, la EcoHouse es una experiencia ideal para los jóvenes y sus padres. “Los letreros en las paredes explican todas las exhibiciones”, dice Katherine Gloede, gerente de proyectos de EcoHouse”, pero para realmente vivir el efecto EcoHouse completo, ven a escuchar a los guías expertos de CEC, o lleva tu celular o teléfono inteligente y escucha la audio guía”.
