“All are welcome”

I am very proud to be Puerto Rican, and the National Puerto Rican Day Parade leadership and friends inspire in me even more pride in my community, as it gets ready to provide a space for Puerto Ricans to come together and celebrate our culture, heritage and contributions to society.

This parade is happening at a time when Puerto Rico is facing a political and economic crisis that is impacting everyone on the island. Unfortunately, the narrative around the Parade is not celebration and concern for the situation on the island but rather misinformation about who I am and what I stand for.

We must shift the focus. We cannot let people who are unfamiliar with Puerto Rican history define the narrative and experiences of our community. I want to repeat what I have said in many interviews, both in prison and since my release. I personally, and we as a community have transcended violence — it’s crucial for people to understand that we’re not advocating anything that would be a threat to anyone.

I thank the Parade leadership and so many Puerto Rican and Latino leaders for standing for the ideals that I represent, for setting the record straight against all odds, for using so much of their political capital to show, once more, their unflinching commitment to justice for the Puerto Rican people in New York and in Puerto Rico, and for all New Yorkers.

Now, let’s move on. Let’s celebrate. Let’s be puertorriqueños and puertorriqueñas. The honor should not be for me; it should be bestowed on our pioneers who came to the United States and opened doors. It should go for activists and elected officials who fight for justice and a fair society. It should go to the many companies that though not showing a float on June 11th have continued to support our future through scholarship funds.

I will be on Fifth Avenue not as your honoree but as a humble Puerto Rican and grandfather who at 74 continues to be committed to helping raise awareness about the fiscal, health care and human rights crisis Puerto Rico is facing at this historic juncture.

Now, more than ever, when Puerto Rico is facing such a moment of crisis, unity among the Puerto Rican people is so important. I will continue to work to solve our problems as we work through our differences.

This is a national parade. All Puerto Ricans are welcome, and I encourage people to attend the parade and enjoy this day and each other, as has always been done to celebrate our Puerto Ricanness.

Estoy muy orgulloso de ser puertorriqueño, y el liderazgo y los amigos del Desfile Puertorriqueño inspiran un orgullo aún más profundo sobre mi comunidad, la cual se prepara para proveer un espacio para que los puertorriqueños nos reunamos y celebremos nuestra cultura, herencia y contribuciones a la sociedad.

Este desfile está ocurriendo en un momento en que Puerto Rico se enfrenta a una crisis política y económica que está afectando a todos en la isla. Desafortunadamente, la narrativa alrededor del desfile no es de celebración y preocupación por la situación en la isla, sino más bien información errónea sobre quién soy y qué represento.

Debemos cambiar el enfoque. No podemos dejar que las personas que no estén familiarizadas con la historia puertorriqueña definan la narrativa y las experiencias de nuestra comunidad. Quiero repetir lo que he dicho en muchas entrevistas, tanto en prisión como desde mi liberación. Yo, personalmente, y nosotros, como comunidad, hemos trascendido la violencia. Es crucial que la gente entienda que no estamos defendiendo nada que sea una amenaza para nadie.

Doy las gracias al liderazgo del desfile y a tantos líderes puertorriqueños y latinos por defender los ideales que yo represento, por dejar las cosas claras contra toda lógica, por usar tanto su capital político para demostrar, una vez más, su firme compromiso con la justicia para el pueblo puertorriqueño en Nueva York y en Puerto Rico, y para todos los neoyorquinos.

Ahora, vamos a seguir adelante. Celebremos. Seamos puertorriqueños y puertorriqueñas. El honor no debe ser para mí; debe ser otorgado a nuestros pioneros que vinieron a los Estados Unidos y abrieron puertas. Debe ser para los activistas y los funcionarios electos quienes luchan por la justicia y una sociedad justa. Debe dirigirse a las muchas compañías que, aunque no presentarán una carroza el 11 de junio, han continuado apoyando nuestro futuro a través de fondos de becas.

Estaré en la Quinta Avenida. No como su homenajeado sino como un humilde puertorriqueño y abuelo que a los 74 años mantiene su compromiso de ayudar a crear conciencia sobre la crisis fiscal, de salud y de derechos humanos que Puerto Rico enfrenta en esta coyuntura histórica.

Ahora, más que nunca, cuando Puerto Rico se enfrenta a un momento de crisis, la unidad entre el pueblo puertorriqueño es muy importante. Voy a seguir trabajando para resolver nuestros problemas mientras superamos nuestras diferencias.

Este es un desfile nacional. Todos los puertorriqueños son bienvenidos y animo a la gente a asistir al desfile y disfrutar de este día y del uno al otro, como siempre se ha hecho para celebrar nuestra puertorriqueñidad.
