In partnership with the Chabad South Bronx, local residents and elected officials gathered in late December to light the Menorah and commemorate Hanukkah at Bronx Borough Hall.
Observed for eight days and nights, Hanukkah is celebrated by lighting a candle on a Menorah lamp at evening. An additional candle is lit every evening until eight candles in total are burning.
The Chabad South Bronx hosted the lighting ceremonies on the Grand Concourse in collaboration with the Office of the Borough President Vanessa Gibson.
The Jewish festival of Hanukkah serves as a reminder of the importance and power of light over darkness, resilience and strength. “This year has been a challenging one for our Jewish communities in the Bronx and beyond, and we pray for abundant healing and peace for our families,” shared Gibson in a statement.
Chabad South Bronx is a local, independently funded non-profit founded in 2017 by Rabbi Choli and Chana Mushka Mishulovin. The organization seeks to bring together all Jews, of all backgrounds, together through the study and celebration of Judaism and also welcomes community residents who share a respect for and interest in Judaic traditions. Among many of the activities it organizes are Shabbat dinners, Torah classes and challah baking.
“May each light on the Menorah serve as a symbol of hope for a better tomorrow,” added Gibson. “May we celebrate Hanukkah with love, patience, kindness and spending time with family and friends. En colaboración con Chabad South Bronx, residentes locales y oficiales electos se reunieron a finales de diciembre para encender la Menorah y conmemorar Hanukkah en el condado del Bronx.
Durante ocho días y ocho noches, Hanukkah se celebra encendiendo una vela en una lámpara Menorah por la noche. Se enciende una vela más cada noche consecutiva hasta encender ocho velas en total.
Chabad South Bronx organizó las ceremonias de encendido en Grand Concourse en colaboración con la Oficina de la presidenta del condado, Vanessa Gibson.
