A Welded Wonder

The spinning wheels inside a young artist’s mind and those from vintage wagons from across the borough collided at the intersection of Fordham Road and the Grand Concourse.
Welder and artist Colin Nicodemo was recently unveiled as the creator of the new art installation at the Fordham intersection – which will be on display until next spring.
Nicodemo’s 10-foot-high project is titled All Roads Lead to Fordham and centers on a hand-welded circular shaped statue.
The installation is found on the southern side of the East Fordham Road Overpass on the Grand Concourse.
This past Fri., Sept. 14th, the artist was surrounded by family members and members of the Fordham Road Business Improvement District (BID) at the unveiling.

“We had this concept that was Fordham Road and the importance of transportation and meshing that together,” explained Nicodemo, who collaborated with the BID and the New York City Department of Transportation’s Art Program. “[We wanted to come up] with a piece that people can look at and give appreciation to however they see fit.”
Nicodemo said he searched across the borough to find vintage wheels from old wagons and carts, and then welded them together to create the unique urban art project.
“I didn’t do anything to them but drill holes,” he laughed. “I got [the wheels] from different junk yards and flea markets. The gears are from an antique shop.”
“This project has been in the works since 2015,” said BID Deputy Director Daniel Bernstein. “We’ve actually done a lot of projects like this in the past. What we do is partner with the Department of Transportation’s Art Program, what they do is kind of select hot spots throughout the city, where they want to see art.”

Bernstein said Nicodemo’s project brought together a number of themes that were relevant to the neighborhood.
“He really had a great idea for something that would center around Fordham Road,” said Bernstein. “[The sense of the] traffic that we get, the accessibility that runs through here. The wheels are really from all different times, over the years, which he really wanted to get across to everybody.”
“I’m proud to be here,” said Nicodemo. “This means a lot.”

“Teníamos este concepto que era Fordham Road y la importancia del transporte y el acoplamiento entre sí”, explicó Nicodemo, quien colaboró con el BID y el Programa de Arte del Departamento de Transporte de la ciudad de Nueva York. “[Queríamos presentar] una pieza que las personas puedan ver y apreciar lo que consideren conveniente”.
Nicodemo dijo que buscó en todo el distrito para encontrar ruedas antiguas de carretas y carros viejos, y luego las unió para crear el singular proyecto de arte urbano.
“No les hice nada más que perforar agujeros”, se rio. “Conseguí [las ruedas] de diferentes depósitos de chatarra y mercados de pulgas. Los engranajes son de una tienda de antigüedades”.
“Este proyecto ha estado en proceso desde 2015”, dijo el subdirector del BID, Daniel Bernstein. “En realidad, hemos hecho muchos proyectos como este en el pasado. Lo que hacemos es asociarnos con el Programa de Arte del Departamento de Transporte, y hacen una selección de puntos importantes en toda la ciudad donde quieren ver arte”.
Bernstein dijo que el proyecto de Nicodemo reunió una serie de temas relevantes para el vecindario.
“Realmente tenía una gran idea para algo que se centraría en Fordham Road”, dijo Bernstein. “[El sentido del] tránsito que recibimos, la accesibilidad que corre por aquí. Las ruedas son realmente de diferentes tiempos, a lo largo de los años, que realmente quería transmitir a todos”.
“Estoy orgulloso de estar aquí”, dijo Nicodemo. “Esto significa mucho”.
