Legendary mambo king Tito Puente will be the focus of a three-day conference next month at the Hostos Center for the Arts and Culture. “Tito Puente: A 50-Year Retrospective of El Rey” will examine the life and career of the Latin music icon through concerts, panel discussions, a percussion workshop and more. It will kick off on April 20, which would have been Puente’s 94th birthday, with the screening of the documentary Tito Puente, the King of Latin Music. The film was completed shortly before Puente’s death in May 2000 at age 77. On April 21, a 12-piece ensemble led by Henríquez will perform, and Conzo will host a one-hour session titled “The Listening Room” to present never-before-heard Puente recordings from different points in his career. Conzo, who has lectured on Latin music for Hostos’ Continuing Education division, has more than 6,000 Puente recordings in his library. Events for April 22 include a Latin percussion workshop, family concert, panel discussion and closing dance party. Several of the retrospective events are free to attend, but tickets are required for entry. A weekend pass to all events can be purchased for $45.
