A striker home amid the stripes
NYC FC signs Spaniard star David Villa

No break in the Bronx.
While others might have shaken off their soccer fever, some key sports stakeholders are banking that there is enough love for the sport to go far beyond Brazil – and that it will take hold instead in the Bronx.
British soccer club Manchester City and the New York Yankees have come together to establish the New York City Football Club (NYC FC), the first Major League Soccer (MLS) team located in New York City.
In the Bronx, specifically.
NYC FC will call Yankee Stadium home starting in 2015, and the legendary ballfield will be where fans of futbol and pelota alike root for their home teams.
Adding to the excitement was recent news that Spaniard striker David Villa, 32, has been signed by NYC FC. His contract begins in 2015, when the brand new franchise makes its official debut.
He was the first player to sign for the team.
“It’s a great joy to be here in New York, the best city in the world,” he said from Macombs Dam Park, where on July 31st, he met with youths for a “picadito,” an informal soccer practice.
Approximately 50 children and Villa participated in small sided games, passing drills and “keepie uppies”.
The children were from South Bronx United, a summer school program that serves 600 children between the ages of 4 and 19. It is one of the many community sponsorships that the soccer club has sought to establish.
“¡Viva Villa! Te amo!” yelled the children to the soccer star.
Villa practiced with different teams of boys and girls, and posed for group photos. The afternoon brought back memories.
“[This] reminds me of when I was a kid and also wanted an autograph from my idols,” he recalled in Spanish “It doesn’t take a lot to make children happy.”
Villa’s decision to leave behind the renowned European league and to move stateside surprised some observers.
But Villa believes that the MLS has been improving for some time. He said he believed that it had become a very competitive league, and he was committed to helping it grow.
“I’ve won every possible title in Europe,” he said. “I want to start anew in a different part of the world.”
Villa currently holds the record of top scorer for the Spanish national team and Spain’s top scorer in World Cup matches. In 2010, he scored five goals and led his country to World Cup victory in South Africa.
But Brazil 2014 was another story.
After losses to the Netherlands and Chile, Spain would be eliminated from competition.
In what would prove to be his last match for the national team, Villa scored a final goal against Australia.
He left in tears.
“I wanted to keep on playing,” he said. “I had other expectations and didn’t want to go home.”
He is not the only European star to join the New York team. Chelsea’s all-time leading goal scorer, midfielder Frank Lampard, has also signed to start the 2015 season at Yankee Stadium.
“We never played together, but I know him very well,” said Villa. “He is a great player.”
Before making his official move to New York, Villa will spend a season in Australia, where he will play for Melbourne City FC, a sister club to NYC FC.
Claudio Reyna, a retired American soccer player, serves now as NYC FC’s Director of Football Operations.
Reyna said that there is a niche in the city for soccer. There has been genuine enthusiasm from fans, he added, one that is being met with significant investment and attention to putting together a dynamic sports experience.
“The quality of the product is number one,” he said. “If people come to the stadium and watch a good match, they will want to come again.”

Mientras que otros podrían haberse sacudido la fiebre del futbol, algunos actores deportivos clave están apostando que hay suficiente amor para que el deporte vaya mucho más allá de Brasil y que pueda arraigarse en el Bronx.
El club británico de fútbol Manchester City y los Yankees de Nueva York se han unido para establecer el Club de Fútbol de la ciudad de Nueva York (NYC FC por sus siglas en inglés), el primer equipo de la Major League Soccer (MLS) ubicado en la ciudad de Nueva York.
En el Bronx, específicamente.
NYC FC llamará su casa al estadio de los Yankees a partir del 2015, y el legendario campo de béisbol será donde los fans del fútbol y la pelota echen raíces por igual por sus equipos locales.
Agregando emoción, fue reciente noticia que el delantero español David Villa, de 32 años, ha sido firmado con el NYC FC. Su contrato inicia en 2015, cuando la nueva franquicia haga su debut oficial.
Fue el primer jugador fichado por el equipo.
“Es una gran alegría estar aquí en Nueva York, la mejor ciudad del mundo”, dijo desde Macombs Dam Park, donde el 31 de julio se reunió con los jóvenes para un “picadito”, una práctica informal de futbol.

La decisión de Villa de dejar atrás la reconocida liga europea y desplazarse a Estados Unidos sorprendió a algunos observadores.
Pero Villa cree que la MLS ha mejorado desde hace algún tiempo. Dijo que cree que se ha convertido en una liga muy competitiva y se ha comprometido a ayudarla a crecer.
“He ganado todos los títulos posibles en Europa”, comentó. “Quiero empezar de nuevo en una parte diferente del mundo”.
Villa actualmente posee el récord de máximo goleador de la selección española y el máximo goleador de España en los partidos del Mundial. En 2010 marcó cinco goles y llevó a su país a la victoria de la Copa del Mundo en Sudáfrica.
Pero Brasil 2014 fue otra historia.
Después de las pérdidas frente a Holanda y Chile, España sería eliminada de la competencia.
En lo que resultaría ser su último partido con la selección nacional, Villa anotó un gol final contra Australia.
Se fue llorando.
“Quería seguir jugando”, dijo. “Tenía otras expectativas y no quería irme a casa”.
Él no es la única estrella europea uniéndose al equipo de Nueva York. El mayor goleador de todos los tiempos del Chelsea, el mediocampista Frank Lampard, también ha firmado para comenzar la temporada 2015 en el Yankee Stadium.
