“A new chapter”
Bronx Democrats unanimously endorse Espaillat

Yudelka Tapia campaigned for State Senator Adriano Espaillat in his Congressional race in 2012.
But many Bronx elected officials threw their support that year to the incumbent, Congressman Charles Rangel.
“That was an uphill battle we had,” she recalled.
This year, Tapia stood with Bronx Democratic Chairman and Assemblymember Carl Heastie; Bronx Borough President Rubén Díaz Jr.; Assemblymembers Jose Rivera, Jeff Dinowitz, Marcos Crespo, and Victor Pichardo; and Councilmember Ritchie Torres as they gathered on the steps of Bronx Borough Hall as the Bronx Democratic party announced its unanimous support for Espaillat.
“This is about looking to the future,” said Assemblymember Heastie.
“For residents of The Bronx there is no stronger advocate. Adriano has walked Fordham Road, he knows the struggles our local businesses face and I know he will listen and act when our community speaks.”
President Diaz said it had been difficult not to back Espaillat in 2012. The two served together in the New York State Assembly and have long been friends. He said that Rangel had indicated in 2012 that it would be his last race.
“I think two years ago was the right time for Charlie to run, and go out with dignity,” he said.
But now, he argued, it was time for a change.
“We don’t have the luxury of waiting another two years for someone with the energy, experience and integrity to serve us.” It was, he added, “time to turn the page and write a new chapter.”
Assemblymember Dinowitz agreed.
“I felt that [2012] would be the last election for Charles Rangel,” he said.
And he too had come to know Espaillat as a colleague in the Assembly.
“I think it’s time. He is a coalition builder, and that’s very important,” he said. “I know that he will pay attention to the Bronx and that is very important.”
“Too many families in the Bronx are struggling to find a decent job and pay the rent,” said City Councilmember Ritchie Torres said in a statement. “Adriano Espaillat will bring new economic opportunities to our borough and fight to help Bronx residents living below the poverty line.”
Espaillat’s affinity for the borough that had become part of the 13th Congressional District after redistricting was noted repeatedly by his supporters on Monday, as were the comments made by Rangel in the first debate.
“I am not apprehensive about representing the Bronx,” said Espaillat in his remarks.
He thanked his supporters and reiterated his enthusiasm for representing the borough, saying he was “deeply humbled” by the support. He pledged to work to unite residents and to address their shared concerns on affordable housing, employment and education. And he said that the Bronx would not be an after-thought.
“One of my first actions will be to open an office in the Bronx. For far too long, residents have had nowhere to turn to be heard by their Congressmember – that changes week one,” he promised.
Rangel has been criticized for not opening a district office in the borough.
“We need Washington to come back to this borough again,” he said.
Assemblymember Victor Pichardo, newly elected in 2013, embraced the opportunity to endorse Espaillat.
“Adriano has the energy we need to represent our people in Washington. And I would be remiss not to mention the historical context,” he said, referring to the fact that Espaillat, if elected, would become the first member of Congress of Dominican heritage.
He also made sure to extol the incumbent’s service.
“Congressman Rangel has done a hell of a job,” he added. “He’s been an elected official longer than I’ve been alive, but it’s time for a new direction. He has given what he can give. It’s about new energy.”

Yudelka Tapia hizo campaña para el senador estatal Adriano Espaillat en su carrera para el congreso en 2012.
Pero muchos funcionarios electos del Bronx le dieron su apoyo ese año al titular, Charles Rangel.
“Esa fue una batalla cuesta arriba que tuvimos”, recordó.
Este año, Tapia se quedó con el presidente demócrata del Bronx, el asambleísta Carl Heastie; el Presidente del Bronx Rubén Díaz Jr.; los asambleístas José Rivera, Jeff Dinowitz, Marcos Crespoy Víctor Pichardo; y el concejal Ritchie Torres cuando se reunieron en la escalinata del Bronx Borough Hall mientras el Partido Demócrata del Bronx anunciaba su apoyo unánime a Espaillat.
“Esto se trata de mirar hacia el futuro”, dijo el asambleísta Heastie.
“Para los residentes del Bronx no hay defensor más fuerte. Adriano ha caminado Fordham Road, sabe los problemas que enfrentan nuestras empresas locales y sé que él va a escuchar y actuar cuando nuestra comunidad hable”.
El presidente Díaz dijo que había sido difícil no apoyar a Espaillat en 2012. Ambos sirvieron juntos en la Asamblea del Estado de Nueva York y han sido amigos durante mucho tiempo . Dijo que Rangel había indicado en 2012 que sería su última carrera.
“Creo que hace dos años era el momento adecuado para que Charlie se fuera, y saliera con dignidad”, dijo.
Pero ahora, según él, era el momento para un cambio.
“No tenemos el lujo de esperar otros dos años a alguien con la energía, experiencia e integridad para servirnos.” Fue, añadió, “hora de dar vuelta a la página y escribir un nuevo capítulo”.
El asambleísta Dinowitz estuvo de acuerdo.
“Sentí que en [2012] sería la última elección para Charles Rangel,” dijo.
Y él también había llegado a conocer a Espaillat como colega en la Asamblea.
“Creo que ya es hora. Él es un constructor de coaliciones, y eso es muy importante “, dijo. “Yo sé que él va a prestar atención al Bronx y eso es muy importante.”
“Demasiadas familias del Bronx tienen dificultades para encontrar un trabajo decente y pagar el alquiler”, dijo el concejal de la ciudad Ritchie Torres en un comunicado. “Adriano Espaillat traerá nuevas oportunidades económicas para nuestro municipio y luchará para ayudar a los residentes del Bronx que viven por debajo del umbral de pobreza.”
La afinidad de Espaillat con el Bronx, el que se convirtió en parte del Distrito 13 del Congreso después de la redistribución de distritos, y los comentarios sobre esto que hizo Rangel en el debate, fueron comentadas en varias ocasiones por sus partidarios el lunes.
“No estoy preocupado acerca de lo que representa el Bronx”, dijo Espaillat en sus comentarios.
Dio las gracias a sus partidarios y reiteró su entusiasmo por representar el Bronx, diciendo que estaba “profundamente conmovido” por el apoyo. Se comprometió a trabajar para unir a los residentes y para abordar sus preocupaciones comunes en materia de vivienda asequible, el empleo y la educación. Y dijo que el Bronx no sería plato de segunda mesa.
“Una de mis primeras acciones será abrir una oficina en el Bronx. Durante demasiado tiempo, los residentes no han tenido a quién recurrir para ser escuchados por su congresista – eso se cambia en la primera semana”, prometió.
Rangel ha sido criticado por no abrir una oficina de distrito en el Bronx.
“Necesitamos que Washington este presente”.
El asambleísta Víctor Pichardo, recién elegido en 2013, aprovechó la oportunidad para refrendar a Espaillat.
“Adriano tiene la energía que necesitamos para representar a nuestro pueblo en Washington. Y sería negligente no mencionar el contexto histórico “, dijo, refiriéndose al hecho de que Espaillat, de ser elegido, se convertiría en el primer miembro del Congreso de herencia dominicana.
También se aseguró a ensalzar el servicio del operador tradicional.
“El congresista Rangel ha hecho un gran trabajo”, agregó. “Ha sido un funcionario electo más de lo que he vivido, pero es el momento para una nueva dirección. Él ha dado lo que él puede dar. Se trata de una nueva energía”.
