A Mighty Machine

With a simple click you can help students from the South Bronx continue their mission of providing sustainable solutions to combat food insecurity.
The Green Bronx Machine is an organization started by South Bronx school administrator Stephen Ritz, and students from his high school, the Hyde Leadership Charter School, together with partner schools JVL Wildcat Academy in Hunts Point and PS 55 in Claremont Village.
Ritz and the students install green roofs, hydroponic farms and aeroponic farms throughout the Bronx—and throughout the country – to dispense knowledge and plant the seeds of sustainability. They have even been invited to Qatar to install gardens.
At their school, the students have also installed food walls, from which they can graze on healthy produce during the day.
And now the students have produced a short film, titled The Green Bronx Machine naturally, that details their progress.
The group started with the simple goal of planting and growing seeds, and it has since grown into a mechanism that has so far helped to grow 30,000 pounds of food—and has helped keep school attendance rates up.
Ritz, who serves as Dean of Students at Hyde Leadership, attests that attendance has gone up from 40 to 93 percent since the initiative began.
“Turning growing food into academic success is really spectacular,” said Ritz. “We’re proving that’s something we can do,” said Ritz.
And now the group also has a chance to go to San Francisco, which is host to the Food and Farm Film Fest, a sustainability-centered film festival.
The festival will also include short films submitted to the Real Food Media Contest, which promotes grassroots, sustainable food and farming.
Online voters get to select the top ten films to determine which will be screened at the Food and Farm Film Fest. The films were selected by a number of judges, including the likes of Padma Lakshmi, Michael Pollan and Alice Waters.
The Green Bronx Machine is one of the contest’s finalists. They are the only contestants to represent New York City.
Among the finalists, the top winner will receive $5,000, as well as other perks, including consultations from communications and filmmaking experts to help with future film endeavors.
“The money will help sustain us and help us expand. Our goal is to push into as many schools as possible,” explained Ritz.
Voting will last until March 2nd.
If the group wins, Ritz says he’ll also seek funding to take a group of ten students to the festival.
“If kids in the South Bronx can do this, then kids across America can do it,” said Ritz. “This is all part of the new Bronx.”
