Where others see mounds of dirt, Elaine Cintrón sees the glimmer of hope. She gazed out recently at the current state of Saw Mill Playground, comprised of hills of packed brown earth and populated only by an excavator. The city has launched a $5.86 million renovation of the playground, located at East 139th Street and Brook Avenue. Cintrón said a makeover for the site is long overdue. “It’s great to know that, finally, we’re going to get a modern park where the kids can play,” she said. “We’re going to have bathrooms, and I’m glad we’re going to have a track for the kids.” The Mott Haven resident said she was thrilled that the city was taking action – and she is hoping they’ll do even more. The park’s transformation has great personal meaning for Cintrón, whose niece Naiesha Pearson, known affectionately as “Nana,” was tragically killed at the site 12 years ago. On September 5, 2005, 10-year-old Pearson was enjoying a Labor Day barbeque at the playground when she was struck by a stray bullet fired by a man who brought a gun to the playground. The shooter, Rene Bonilla, was engaged in a dispute with another man, who was standing near Pearson and was seriously wounded in the shooting. “She was an innocent bystander,” said Cintrón. “It was all so senseless.” Each year, the family holds a march against gun violence through the community, and another Pearson aunt served as an organizer of the Million Moms March. Bonilla was convicted of murder in 2007 and is now serving a 50-year prison sentence. In 2012, the corner of East 139th Street and Brook Avenue was co-named for Pearson. If it were up to Cintrón, the playground would be renamed for Naiesha Pearson, just as the street corner was. Cintrón remembered her niece as a jovial kid who enjoyed life. She said the new playground would dispel many negative memories local residents have of the shooting. “The old playground, it’s gone. There’s not as much to dwell on,” she said. “People won’t think as much about what happened here.” Cintrón said that local residents were involved in community input meetings with the Parks Department to help plan the new playground. “Kids were in there too, thinking of ideas for things they wanted to see here, so that was great to see,” said Cintrón. On July 24, NYC Parks Commissioner Mitchell J. Silver visited the site to break ground on the renovation project, joined by City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, NYC Parks Bronx Borough Commissioner Iris Rodríguez-Rosa and Community Board 1 Parks Chairman Hakiem Yahmadi. The new Saw Mill Playground, expected to open in spring 2018, will feature multi-age play areas, new ball courts, a running track, comfort station and other amenities. The renovation project is part of the Community Parks Initiative (CPI), the city’s $130 million investment to rejuvenate 35 parks in communities with the greatest need. “Tasked by the mayor early in my tenure as Parks Commissioner to create a fair and balanced Park system for our city, it is great to see three years later so many Community Parks Initiative sites begin construction in underserved neighborhoods,” said Silver. “Groundbreakings symbolize the beginning of what will be a total transformation of parks like Saw Mill into enhanced recreational assets for the communities they serve.” Taisha Pearson, Naiesha’s mother, said she was grateful neighborhood children would have a better place to play, as the old playground was mostly cement and had a broken water fountain. “I’m truly happy. This is a new era for the kids in the community,” she said. The playground is named for the Saw Mill Creek, which once flowed by the site. The creek originated in Gates Place in the North Bronx, ran along what is now Brook and Webster Avenues, and emptied into the Bronx Kill. Last year, Cintrón started a Change.org petition calling for the playground renaming. The petition appealed to Silver and State Senator Rubén Díaz and garnered over 600 signatures. A bid for a renaming must be accompanied by detailed support from numerous elected officials and the Community Board, according to NYC Parks, making it an unlikely scenario that the entire playground would be named after Pearson. “The Parks Department notified us that it was harder,” said Cintrón, who acknowledged it was a long shot the playground would one day bear her niece’s name. She said that NYC Parks allowed the family to have a memorial for Pearson in the previous playground, in the form of a cross hung on the gate. “I’m sure they’ll let us do that in the new one,” Cintrón said. “But a renaming would be even better.” Bronx Parks Commissioner Rodríguez-Rosa said elements of parks and playgrounds, such as trees or benches, could be dedicated to honor the deceased. “Our hearts go out to Mrs. Cintrón and her family for their tragic loss,” Rodríguez-Rosa said. “We would be happy to meet with her to discuss the many options to remember loved ones in our parks – including our Adopt-a-Bench, Adopt-a-Park and Adopt-a-Tree programs.” Pearson said regardless of whether the new playground was renamed, a rejuvenated community space still honored her niece’s memory if it brought other children happiness. “My niece was a joyful person. We can continue her memory in a joyful new place,” said Cintrón. “It’s a great new beginning.” The online petition can be found at http://bit.ly/2tXEC28.
