The president of the Committee for Puerto Rico at the United Nations, Olga I. Sanabria Dávila, continues a hunger strike that began on January 1st. The strike is in favor of the release of Puerto Rican political prisoner, Oscar López Rivera, just days from when President Barack Obama will complete his term and thus end the window of opportunity for Obama to take this action. “I am moved to begin this hunger strike by the indignation I feel due to the years patriot Oscar López has spent in prison and the present uncertainty as to whether U.S. President Barack Obama will pardon Rivera, who is 73 years old and has been incarcerated far from his family and his land for more than 35 years,” said Sanabria. “This is an uncertainly imposed on all of the Puerto Rican people despite the broad support for Oscar López’s release in Puerto Rico, the United States and throughout the world.” She recalled that the United Nations and the Movement of Non-Aligned Countries “have adopted resolutions which have asked the president of the United States to release Oscar López without further delay while stating that López´s case is a humanitarian one.” She called on those persons and entities who have expressed support for Oscar López’s release in the past to reiterate the call at this urgent time as some have done, including Presidents Nicolás Maduro, Raúl Castro Ruz, Daniel Ortega, José Mujica; former U.S. president Jimmy Carter; also, Judge Baltazar Garzón, the governor of Puerto Rico Ricardo Rosselló; its Resident Commissioner in Washington Jennifer González; Archbishop of San Juan Roberto González Nieves; Bishop Rafael Moreno; Eduardo Bhatia, outgoing president of the Senate of Puerto Rico; César Miranda, outgoing Justice Secretary of Puerto Rico; U.S. Congress members Nydia Velázquez and Luis Gutiérrez; the American Federation of Labor -CIO; Ricky Martin; Danny Rivera; Tego Calderón; Lin Manuel Miranda and many others. Sanabria stated that she had been preparing for the hunger strike for some time. “Although this decision was of my own volition, I had several conversations regarding my intention with family, friends, colleagues and leaders and members of the movement for the release of Oscar López.” She indicated that during the initial stages of her hunger strike, she planned on consuming only coconut water and water. For the duration of her hunger strike, Sanabria will remain at the Puerto Rican Art and Culture Fund, in the Santurce area of San Juan, Puerto Rico, where several have accompanied her in brief fasts. She related to those who wish to join the hunger strike that “this action can be carried out in different ways and for a specific duration.” Sanabria added, “I only ask for moral support and that any act in my support become an act that contributes to the general campaign for the release of Oscar López Rivera.” For more information, please visit http://bit.ly/2jBEvYu. La presidenta del Comité de Puerto Rico en las Naciones Unidas, Olga I. Sanabria Dávila, continúa una huelga de hambre que comenzó el 1° de enero. La huelga es en favor de la liberación del prisionero político puertorriqueño Oscar López Rivera, a pocos días de que el presidente Barack Obama termine su mandato y por lo tanto acabe con la ventana de oportunidad para tomar esta acción. “Estoy motivada a comenzar esta huelga de hambre por la indignación que siento por los años que el patriota Oscar López ha pasado en prisión y la incertidumbre actual sobre si el presidente de Estados Unidos, Barack Obama, perdonará a Rivera, quien tiene 73 años y ha estado encarcelado lejos de su familia y su tierra por más de 35 años”, dijo Sanabria. “Esta es una incertidumbre impuesta a todos los puertorriqueños a pesar del amplio apoyo a la liberación de Oscar López en Puerto Rico, los Estados Unidos y el mundo”. Recordó que las Naciones Unidas y el Movimiento de Países No Alineados “han adoptado resoluciones que han pedido al presidente de los Estados Unidos que libere a Oscar López sin más demora, al tiempo que afirman que su caso es humanitario”. Pidió a aquellas personas y entidades que han expresado su apoyo a la liberación de Oscar López en el pasado, reiterar el llamado en este momento urgente, como algunos ya lo han hecho, incluyendo a: los presidentes Nicolás Maduro, Raúl Castro Ruz, Daniel Ortega y José Mujica; el ex presidente de los Estados Unidos, Jimmy Carter; también el juez Baltazar Garzón; el gobernador de Puerto Rico, Ricardo Rosselló; su comisionada residente en Washington, Jennifer González; el arzobispo de San Juan, Roberto González Nieves; el obispo Rafael Moreno; Eduardo Bhatia, presidente saliente del Senado de Puerto Rico; César Miranda, secretario saliente de Justicia de Puerto Rico; los congresistas de los Estados Unidos Nydia Velázquez y Luis Gutiérrez; la Federación Estadounidense del Trabajo -CIO; Ricky Martin; Danny Rivera; Tego Calderón; Lin Manuel Miranda y muchos más. Sanabria declaró que se estuvo preparando para la huelga de hambre durante algún tiempo. “Aunque esta decisión fue de voluntad propia, tuve varias conversaciones sobre mi intención con la familia, amigos, colegas y líderes y miembros del movimiento por la liberación de Oscar López”. Indicó que durante las etapas iniciales de su huelga de hambre, planeó consumir sólo agua de coco y agua. Durante su huelga de hambre, Sanabria permanecerá en el Fondo Puertorriqueño de Arte y Cultura, en el área de Santurce, en San Juan, Puerto Rico, donde varios la han acompañado en breves ayunos. Se refirió a quienes desean unirse a la huelga de hambre diciendo: “esta acción se puede llevar a cabo de diferentes maneras y por una duración específica”. Sanabria agregó: “solo pido apoyo moral y que cualquier acto en mi apoyo se convierta en uno que contribuya a la campaña general por la liberación de Oscar López Rivera”.
