I Love the Bronx: Coastal Clean Up

As part of our ongoing BFP series highlighting the various favorite spaces, things and people in our borough, we turn to Nilka Martell, who continues to explore her hometown.
“I am a Bronx native, daughter, sister, mother of three beautiful Bronx babies, photographer, writer and motivator,” says Martell, of Puerto Rican descent.
A paralegal for over 17 years until December 2010, she has since been dedicating her time to exploring the Bronx.
Her energy and enthusiasm are indefatigable, and admirable.
“I want to make my fellow residents aware and informed of how lovely our borough is, what it offers, and how to lend a helping hand in our environment.”
Of this new time in her life, Martell says, “I have never felt so alive.”
September is International Coastal Clean Up month and there are plenty of ways for you to get involved in the Bronx.
This annual event offers the general public the opportunity to become involved in the improvement of local waterways. Each year, hundreds of thousands of pounds of debris is removed from waterways coast to coast.
On Sat., Sept. 13th, the Bronx River Alliance, G.I.V.E., Leadership Team 105 and American Rivers will be hosting a shoreline clean up of the Bronx River at Concrete Plant Park. Sponsored by Keurig Brewer, the event is an opportunity to engage in the maintenance of the only freshwater river in New York City.
Concrete Plant Park is located along the Bronx River, the railroad and the Sheridan Expressway near Whitlock and Westchester Avenues.
The clean up begins at 9 a.m. and free family friendly activities run through 2 p.m. There will be music, fitness activities and yoga.
Volunteers are still needed, and all are welcome.
Also, on Sat., Sept. 20th, the Bronx River Alliance and Friends of Soundview Park will be hosting two coastal clean ups. Both efforts begin at 8:30 a.m.
The Paddle and Pick Up will be held at Concrete Plant Park. Paddlers will make their way from Concrete Plant Park to Soundview Park while collecting debris along the waterfront.
The Long Island Sound Clean Up will be held at Soundview Park. Volunteers for this event are in for some special treatment. Breakfast will be provided by Cabot Creamery Cooperative and The Farmers’ Gratitude Grille. After the clean up, lunch will be provided by Whole Foods. Following the volunteer event, all are encouraged to stay in the park for an afternoon of free activities provided by REI.

On Sun., Sept. 21st, Hutchinson River Restoration Project will be cleaning up the shoreline near Shore Road and City Island Road; the group will also tackle the small little islands which will be reached by canoes. For more information, please email Hutchinsonrrp@aol.com or call 718.885.9653.
My children and I have participated in many of these events throughout the last several years. Each time has been unique.
Hidden within the garbage that has washed up to the coastline, we’ve found some awesome pieces of history, including an intact 1920 Sheffield Farms glass milk bottle. As I’ve written in the past, that discovery led us to do our research and to discover that there had been two Sheffield Farms locations in the Bronx.
Whether it’s bonding with fellow residents committed to a cleaner borough, or a small keepsake that reveals a little bit more about the place you call home, there are treasures to be found.
I encourage you to come out and get involved. Keep in mind you will get dirty, so please dress accordingly and pack lightly.

Asistente legal durante más de 17 años, hasta diciembre de 2010, desde entonces ha dedicado su tiempo a explorar el Bronx. Su energía y entusiasmo son infatigables y admirables.
“Quiero que mis compañeros residentes sean conscientes y estén informados de qué tan hermoso es nuestro condado, lo que ofrece y cómo ayudar a nuestro medio ambiente”.
De esta nueva etapa de su vida, Martell dice: “Nunca me había sentido tan viva”.
Septiembre es el mes internacional de limpieza costera, y hay muchísimas maneras para que usted participe en el Bronx.
Este evento anual ofrece al público en general la oportunidad de participar en la mejora de las vías fluviales locales. Cada año, cientos de miles de libras de desechos se eliminan de las vías fluviales costa a costa.
El sábado 13 de septiembre, la Alianza del río Bronx, G.I.V.E., Equipo de Liderazgo 105 y American Rivers serán anfitriones de una limpieza del litoral del río Bronx en Concrete Plant Park. Patrocinada por Keurig Brewer, el evento es una oportunidad para participar en el mantenimiento del único río de agua dulce en la ciudad de Nueva York.
Concrete Plant Park está situado a lo largo del río Bronx, el ferrocarril y la Autopista Sheridan, cerca de las avenidas Whitlock y Westchester.
La limpieza comienza a las 9 a.m. y las actividades familiares gratuitas duran hasta las 2 p.m. Habrá música, actividades de acondicionamiento físico y yoga.
Todavía se necesitan voluntarios, todos son bienvenidos.
Además, el sábado 20 de septiembre, la Alianza del Río Bronx y Amigos del Parque Soundview serán anfitriones de dos limpiezas costeras. Ambos esfuerzos comienzan a las 8:30 a.m.

Ocultas dentro de la basura que llega hasta la costa, hemos encontrado algunas piezas impresionantes de historia, incluyendo una botella de vidrio intacta de leche Sheffield Farms de 1920. Como he escrito en el pasado, ese descubrimiento nos llevó a investigar y descubrir que hubo dos ubicaciones de Sheffield Farms en el Bronx.
Ya sea que trate de unirse con otros residentes comprometidos con un condado limpio, o un pequeño recuerdo que revele un poco más sobre el lugar que usted llama su hogar, hay tesoros que encontrar.
